trying a new hobby

Your unemployed friend in her twenties is no longer unemployed. I had the quickest, luckiest process of applying for this job. It’s a renowned company that I’m so excited to join! It’s on an island, too!

My recent hobby revolved around that. Or better yet, around working in general. My hobby was jumping between daydreaming about the time I get the job and procrastinating the application process because I was scared, and hence, lost ambition. Patience, too.

I got stuck in a loop of constantly waiting for this one thing to pass. Only then could I go on and figure my life out. But first, I have to waste time on so many excuses so I don’t have to deal with the effort of building the life I wanted.

I had time on my hands. At first, I thought that this would be a perfect opportunity to do all the things I left for later while I was still studying, or later on my last job. But then, suddenly there was too much time. And I felt guilty about enjoying my time instead of focusing on finding employment.

How quickly it all changes. Only two days ago, I was drowning in self-pity about being stuck, unaccomplished, and uninspired.

I did, however, pick up a hobby of sorts in these past few months. I love baking. It’s the one thing that relaxes me, and I enjoy food, so I spent a lot of time preparing yummy meals for my family and friends.

I’m glad for that time, because it showed me what I love, but also what I (don’t) want to do in life. I realized how much I don’t want to lead a certain type of life, and that I don’t have to put everything I do in service for others. Sometimes, you can simply like things. They can be a hobby, and nothing more. A fun pastime that you don’t need to try to sell or monetize.

Anyway, here are some of the recipes I tried 😀

I tried these after coming back from my semester abroad in Vilnius, Lithuania:

This is called kibinai.
šaltibarščiai, or “pink soup” 🙂

I love trying out the recipes I ate abroad, or even common pastries you can get at any bakery, but are a bit tricky to make. These are inspired by Paris:

And then here’s some more 😀

This panettone was huge!
pita with cottage cheese
trdelnik
cinnamon rolls – perfect for fall!

Okay, this might have been an overwhelming number of photos, so I’ll stop now. Bye!

  1. Congratulations on the job — and on an island, no less. The part I want to underline is that a hobby can just be a hobby, not a side hustle waiting to be monetised. Baking your way back through Vilnius with kibinai and šaltibarščiai is such a good way to keep a place with you; we do the same thing at home after trips, badly and happily. Good luck with the move.

    1. Thank you! And you’re right – it is the best way to keep a place with me and still be connected. It also allows me to share what I saw and tried with my family and friends back home. Thank you once again!
