advice from your big sister

Would I have done things differently? Is there anything I would keep? A lot of choices needed to be made for things to go this badly.

It’s like you break a foot because you were reckless and vulnerable, and then you brush it off, never take it seriously, and later it heals, but years down the road, you’re left with a permanent limp.

It could’ve been worse. You could’ve lost that foot. But following that same logic, you could’ve gone without ever breaking it in the first place. But what would you know? You were just a kid looking up at shadows, trying to hold on while your hand goes right through the fog of illusion.

That’s how I feel. I feel like my childhood started with losing my footing at my first steps, and ever since then I’ve been doing the panic sprint. I still haven’t found my footing.

So that’s on that. Instead, here’s some advice nobody asked for, but I would like to share.

  1. Rip the band-aid. Just rip it. It’s easier than trying to take it off bit by bit. You’re just prolonging the ugly part. This isn’t about band-aids. Don’t be a good child. It won’t take you far. It won’t make you a better or morally superior adult either.
  2. Please separate your identity from your partner’s. I mean this in a very gentle way. I just don’t know your partner that much that my private issues need to be immediately shared with them. I wouldn’t even tell my other personality what you shared with me in confidence. Please, there’s no need!
  3. Respect people’s privacy. Give them the choice to share something with you or not. Why am I finding things about myself from the fifth ear? That’s the circle of life for you, I guess.
  4. Deflate your ego. I was going to the city to run some errands, and at the earliest in the morning, I had to listen to two grown men on the radio saying how Miley shouldn’t drop her last name from her stage name, or, better yet, that she should “take on her boyfriend’s last name” because it “sounds good”. Give a man a mic and watch a civilization collapse. Please, learn to mind your business. Not everything needs your two cents.

All of these sound unrelated, but I had to say it. What am I missing?

  1. Nothing random about this advice. It’s all wisdom born from living and learning the hard way. Especially the part about not being a ‘good child’ that people-pleasing costs us our whole lives if we’re not careful. Thank you for this. 💛

      6. Actually I don’t know your full name! But you’re only missing a last name on mine. Middle names and stuff like that is not that common in my culture 😅
