you know your past, come meet the future

You’re always much closer to your ten-year-old self than you’ll ever be to your next-year self, which is a daunting realization, but no less true. This scary revelation washed over me when I saw a world fall apart in a single day.

I can revisit the past over and over again, rummage through it in my mind so many times that I get tangled in it. But that plan we had for the weekend was a fantasy that escaped me when I thought I already had it in my grasp. Future, huh?

It wasn’t even next year. It was one single day that made a difference.

It made me think. The past is secured, fastened in your back seat. You catch a glimpse of it in a rear-view mirror, but don’t let your gaze linger too long.

I know time travel has been an obsession for a while now, but that’s only because we haven’t learned the art of letting go yet. So, no. If I had an opportunity to relive one year, any year, I would politely decline.

I’d focus on watching the road ahead, because that’s where I’m meant to go. I don’t know what lies behind the next curve. Might be the greatest adventure, a debt to pay, or nothing at all. That’s scary, too. But this isn’t Inferno, and I’m not Dante. I’d like to find out what is in front of me, what I’m yet to do.

    1. Thank you! (name’s Katarina, by the way 🤭) Let’s say I’m going through a mindset shift. I think it was about time, and I wasted enough time dwelling on the past to fill a lifetime (and it got me nowhere).

    1. Exactly! Instead of reliving the past, let’s just take what we learned from it to live a better today. Thank you, Hazel! 💙
