My friend was driving yesterday evening on our way back from our little trip when she yelled out, “Did you guys see that?”
She saw two dots in the sky drifting apart before disappearing. It could’ve been two airplanes, satellites, or whatever, but our minds went to aliens. Of course.
Their existence is non-negotiable to me. But it got me thinking about the other thing. You know about time in space? How it works, and how it’s been said that if someone observed Earth from outer space, they would be seeing the past?
So if aliens came to visit, would they be able to relate to their own species anymore by the time they got here?
And then it would also mean both that there are other beings in the universe and that we are completely alone.
For those of you who know a bit more about this topic, you’d notice the faults in my theory, but entertain me, will you?

The universe is limitless, so it’s so possible, but sometimes, my mind is just around the circle of my family and my simple world. It’s complex to even think the Earth and too deep to proceed to the universe or other beings, but indeed, so interesting topic.

I see your point. Our everyday lives are focused to what’s a bit closer, we don’t even have the time to stop and look up to the sky and wonder beyond. But I find Earth to be the most confusing. Humans, definitely 😅

I will believe it when I see it but that is just my opinion. If there were aliens I wouldn’t tell anyone about them because I know they would call me nuts. Even if they do exist I think they would be beyond what we can comprehend and if they aren’t that would be underwhelming to say the least. Imagine an alien coming to earth to make peace? That would be underwhelming. I will say however that the current political situation of the world would change instantly if they turned out to be hostile. But again its just my opinion. It would be nice to have something like ET or Star Trek around though. We get options to live on other planets.

I don’t think anyone would call you nuts for that bc at this point, with what we witness here on earth, I don’t know if it would even make the news 😅 But I get your point, and I think they would definitely be beyond our comprehension, definitely not underwhelming bc we see everything through human lens and have also anthropomorphized many things and concepts already, so however aliens would turn out to be, it would still be different from anything we imagine.
Do you think that coming here to make peace would be a reason they show up? They would have to be watching us for a long time to try to intervene, but then that again brings in the concept of time in space, which is sooo cool! And about hostility, I don’t think it would bring people together for one common goal. We’re already hostile towards each other so much that no alien could compete. But that’s again on anthropomorphism and human traits in aliens. I think it’s just us in that.
Yeah, that would be cool, tho. Traveling the galaxies, too!

For me it’s hard to say. To answer this, we must define what life is, but it isn’t that straightforward. Like, what are we if not a collection of quarks and electrons? And life as we know it is only from our observation of what we consider life, based on our own image. How can we know that, say, a pile of rocks, or a bunch of space dust, doesn’t have its own way of experiencing the universe? It’s simply incomprehensible to the human mind. So I’d say I keep my mind open, though I don’t expect that the aliens are essentially human with the exact same metabolism except for slightly different anatomy. Maybe the things we call meteors are beings from galaxies away who travel to Earth on vacation. Who knows?

That’s a very interesting point! I give aliens a more human form in my mind when I joke about conspiracy theories or as movie references, but actually, why I said that the existence of aliens is non-negotiable to me is because the universe is so vast, and life isn’t just as we know it, and our views and understanding is limited, so we try to bring everything closer to our comprehension (that’s why we anthropomorphize aliens or God for that matter), but actually, precisely because of what can stand beyond my understanding, I believe it’s possible. Because why would the whole universe be limited to my mind’s reach? I believe in alien life, although I don’t know if it would be possible to recreate all the same conditions somewhere else in the universe, as they happened on earth that formed life here (not just human either, but any species), you know? But either way, I love just thinking about it, because it’s so fascinating!

I like to think so, yet agreeing with another commenter who imagines all the limitations of our knowledge and all the possible forms life outside of earth might take. I don’t like when people use the idea of a simulation to degrade the notion of other humans (ie deeming NPC, etc.), but I like it in terms of imagining that we experience time within a very specific context that isn’t ultimately whole. So I like to imagine that overlaps between simulations, in a way.

Yeah, that was a good point! I like your point about overlapping simulation. Time is for me a stretch that’s both simultaneous and linear, and I get tangled in it all the time, and I don’t understand all, of course, but it’s so fascinating!

i totally agree. whatever we saw or derived from the data from any exoplanet is moot the moment we actually detect it because that light is already however many millions of years old. i can say with confidence that there is a 99.8% chance that there is – not only extraterrestrial life in the undetectable reaches of the universe – but that there is self aware, self conscious, complex neurological life that is proceeding according to whatever that planet’s constraints are.

Personally, I’m quite sure as well that aliens exist. In such a vast space it makes no sense that aliens don’t exist, of course there’s more life out there.
