friendship is kindness.

Kindness unfortunately doesnโ€™t happen as often as I thought it would. I always assumed itโ€™s a given, natural for people. But even the slightest glimpses of it make me believe that itโ€™s possible for anyone if we try better.

Iโ€™m taken back to New Yearโ€™s Eve 2024. I was still in Lithuania, and I spent the NYE with my best friends. As of course it would happen, I was sick with a fever that day, and spent it inside, in pain and annoyed. I mean, out of all daysโ€ฆ

My besties stayed with me, tucked me in with a warm blanket, took my temperature, made sure I was comfortable, and still made it unforgettable. To this day, that NYE was the best NYE, and one of the best days in my entire life.

We still watched the fireworks, cheered at midnight, and had fun. To this day, nothing has topped the happiness of that one.

Not to say that 2024 was the last time anyone was kind to me (because I have more examples of it, like with that road trip fiasco I talked about, or yesterday, for that matter, when I ended up in the ER), but it did give me two of the kindest people to have as my best friends. How lucky am I?

Theyโ€™re also just kind in everything they do. I feel understood and seen, and thatโ€™s the kindest thing they could do – giving me their friendship.

  1. Your friends staying in with you on New Year’s Eve in Lithuania rather than going out without you โ€” and it ending up the best one you have had โ€” is a much better answer than any grand gesture would have been. Plans falling apart and someone choosing to stay anyway tends to be what people remember years later.

    1. That’s right! It solidified our friendship, and gave us our most fond memories. They also came to visit me in my country the following summer! They’re really the best!

  2. This is so sweet ๐Ÿฅน๐Ÿ’› Friends staying in to take care of you instead of going out is exactly the kind of quiet loyalty that means more than any grand celebration. Sending you care.
