fall is for joy

Did you know that if you throw too many rocks into a river, it might get buried and dry up? And this is true, so be sure to back me up if my little neighbors ever ask why I don’t let them throw rocks (bigger than their heads!) over their heads while standing awfully close to the water’s edge. We were just supposed to skip stones!

Between that and explaining why they shouldn’t be afraid of Boni, who they see every day, but apparently yesterday was different, to saying hi to some wild ducks, sharing coffee and slices of Guinness cake on paper plates, watching the stream gently carry away fallen, golden leaves, and then coming home to see one of my favorite movies start on tv just as we got in, I couldn’t have asked for a better day.

The little girl with a missing tooth is smiling widely at me from a 20-year-old photo cropped into the shape of a heart. I’m finally smiling back.
