spooky

is how time seems to fly.

Two carved Halloween pumpkins with faces placed on a sidewalk near a weathered wooden door, surrounded by fallen leaves.

– Kejt, what’s that mmmmazing smell? – says my sister as soon as she enters the house.

It is a lovely smell. Pumpkin and spice. A cake. With the pecan crumble.

I made a cake, and she bought me nacho chips and dip.

A flock of birds flying in a V formation across a clear blue sky, with autumn leaves of a tree in the foreground.

October is out the door, not turning back to check if I’m ready for November. It’s All Saints’ Day tomorrow. And then anniversary, and then Remembrance Day.

A month of profound nostalgia.

There might be some snow, too.

As the hawk screeches over the naked trees, the flame flickers, wedged between the vase and the stone, beaten by the howling wind.

  1. Dear Kejt, I love the way this little post captures the bittersweet passage of October into November. There is something wonderfully evocative about the aroma of pumpkin and spice, a freshly baked cake shared in exchange for nachos and dip, and a flock of wild geese crossing the autumn sky. These seemingly ordinary moments often become the ones we remember most fondly.

Your closing lines introduce a different atmosphere altogether, with the hawk’s cry, the bare trees, the flickering flame and the howling wind. It is almost as though the season itself is preparing to turn a page, carrying with it memories, anniversaries and the quiet melancholy of approaching winter. A lovely blend of domestic warmth, autumn nostalgia and a touch of spookiness. Thank you for letting us share in these little October moments.

    1. Thank you, Trishikh, for showing appreciation for this post. Indeed those ordinary moments become the fondest memories. Like that formation of wild geese that carries on the last of their wings an entire curtain of change and passage of time.
From the warmth and coziness of October’s fall, where I could enjoy all the season’s delights, I turn to the month ahead, which, to me, is always filled with longing, quiet, love and grief that comes with it, and a more solemn and melancholic feeling. A hawk is a bird flying over the hill, but also it’s always going to be what reminds me of my grandpa, and what this blog’s name stands for, so it’s both literal and deeply symbolic to me. Thank you for recognizing the blend of warmth, nostalgia and spookiness I tried to emit with this post. I’m glad to see you understood my words so precisely and beautifully.
