Next Stop – Kotor

Tucked into a beautiful bay crowned by mountains, Kotor is a must-visit place in Montenegro. Though I must warn you: the roads going into Kotor are no joke.  But this city of cats is worth the drive! Entering the Old Town gates really feels like stepping into a different world. Cobblestone streets, inviting restaurants, rich history, and of course, the cats (just not the one next to the Cathedral of Saint Tryphon – she bites!), make this your perfect summer getaway.

Kotor is really one of those places where you don’t have to plan too much when visiting. The Old Town is beautiful, and there are so many bars and restaurants at every corner, as well as souvenir shops, or fun places like the cat museum, that you can just stumble upon coming around the corner.

If you’re looking for a nice place with a city view, I would recommend leaving the hike to the fortress for a spring/autumn visit, as it is too hot right now and wouldn’t be safe or enjoyable. But don’t worry! If you’re still looking for a spot overseeing the city, I’ve got the place for you! And the best one, at that, as it gives you the view of the entire bay!

Kotor - view from the upper station, bay view

Pull up to this station (there’s a bus going to and from the city for 8 EUR or grab a taxi for 20 EUR – best option for a group to split it), and hop on the cable car for probably the best experience in this whole trip. The cable car ride is 25 EUR round trip (so don’t throw away your ticket when you come up!), lasts about 10 minutes, and climbs to the upper station at 1340 meters, where you can spend as much time as you want. You can grab a drink, have lunch, hike further into the hills, or check out other fun activities, like the coaster train.

The train opens at 10 a.m (while the cable car opens at 9 a.m), lasts about 8 minutes (but you control the speed), and it comes with a souvenir! At two places along the ride, there’s a camera, and after the ride, you can print a high-quality photo to take with you as a reminder of a fun vacation you were on!

Bay of Kotor: Hidden Gems

If, however, you feel like you’ve checked out everything there is to see in Kotor, why not head for any of the other cute towns around, like Perast? It’s a very small town half an hour from Kotor, where you can have a relaxing evening stroll before sitting down for dinner in any of the restaurants on the promenade.

The village of Perast in golden hour

Another must on your list should be Our Lady of the Rocks. You can see the island from Perast, and you can also get a boat from there to get to the island. Be mindful of the price, though. When you drive into Perast, you can park and visit the island for the same price of 20 EUR, or, if you’re not visiting the island, it’s 16 EUR for a day (no prices by the hour!).

Kotor – Perfect Summer Getaway

I know I said that the roads around Kotor are tricky, but I feel like it adds to the experience. Perfect summer road trip along the bay! Kotor is close to other destinations in Montenegro, and you can also extend your visit to neighboring countries like Albania or Croatia. However you decide, you’re in for one fun and cool summer vacation.

Okay, thanks, bye!
